Our Second Week in Nairobi

  • Emmalyn lost her front tooth
    • Her final front tooth had been hanging sideways for the last two weeks — it was awful. We’re so glad it’s finally out and we can all move on with our lives. We had to bribe her with cake to convince her to let us pull it!
  • We went to the Giraffe Center and fed giraffes
    • Their tongues are really strange. This was a top destination in Nairobi, and it was neat to feed the giraffes, but it definitely felt more like a zoo than a rehabilitation facility. We learned a lot about giraffes, but it was a relatively short stop and not the most ethical experience.
  • We spent an entire rainy day at an epic play place
    • This play place was incredible — so much to do, and during the entire day we were there, we maybe saw five other families. The girls got the all-day pass and used it to the max. I bought a two-hour pass and joined them after lunch. It was awesome but exhausting. I lasted an hour and a half; I can’t imagine how the girls kept their energy up all day!
  • We continued with our homeschooling routines, forest camp, and French tutoring, and everything has been going great.
  • We got a tour of the United Nations!
    • This was a real highlight for me. Our fabulous tour guide — the wife of the Russian UN delegate — was knowledgeable and full of fun stories. She showed us around the huge campus, explained the different branches of the UN, and how things work. The UN campus in Nairobi is the only headquarters in Africa and covers 140 acres.
    • It was definitely more of an adult topic, though we did watch some videos with the girls before we went and really fell in love with this song (UN Song). It was evident that not many tourists take the tour — we saw no one else, especially no other kids. Our guide seemed genuinely curious when she asked how we even found out tours were offered.
  • We went bowling
    • It was a lot of fun, the facilities were great. It’s been so amazing being able to spend so much time together.
  • We went cold turkey on tablets
    • We tried to find a balances approach to using their tablets, but the girls were sneaking them and asking about them way more than we liked. Finally had to make the call to cut out all tablets for the time being. It has been amazing. More to come on this, but it was 100% the right move.
